I'm subscribing to a NG whose list size has suddenly shrunk. Originally it
showed about 80 entries, and now it shows two. I unsubscribed and started
again, but still see the last two. Any ideas how to see back further in the
list?
What newsgroup and what server are you using? Different servers keep posts
for different lengths of time. For example, if you subscribe to this
newsgroup directly through MSNews, the messages will remain for at least 90
days. But, if you subscribe to this group using another server, such as your
ISP's, they may have a much shorter retention period.
To know for sure you have all the messages the server you are using
currently has, reset the newsgroup.
While in a newsgroup: View | Current View. Make sure Show All Messages and
Group Messages By Conversation are checked.
Tools | Options | Read. Uncheck: Get XXX headers at a time. Then, right
click on the newsgroup in the Folder Tree | Properties | Local File | Reset.
Switch to another folder and then back and all available messages will be
downloaded again.
Or go to Tools | Options | Maintenance | Clean Up Now and choose the group,
or server at the top and then Reset.
It would be a good idea to compact your folders when you're done.
Click on Outlook Express at the top of the folder tree so no folders are
open. Then: File | Work Offline (or double click Working Online in the
Status Bar). File | Folder | Compact all folders. Don't touch anything until
the compacting is completed.
My personal preference is to disregard synchronizing and rather have OE
check for news when it checks for mail. Tools | Accounts | News. Check: "
Include this account...........".

Thanks, but none of that worked. I now have three recent messages. Someone
posted a new one in the last few hours. news.sf.global.net is the NG server.
The NG is netscape.public.mozilla.seamonkey. I think I'll post a msg to it
to see if someone has noticed a similar change in # of entries.
I see another NG that has 794 entries and another with 186.

A server side issue I would assume. For MS newsgroups, I would suggest using
MSNews.
