I have a long history of unsolved OE6 crashes.   Running  IE6 OE6 and SP2.
Was advised in IE General NOT to get IE7 until I "fix" IE6.

Here's an example that happened yesterday.

Yesterday  I was doing an HTML email reply with color only---no images, no
script--nothing but colored text not even color in the original.

Crash was on MSOE.dll
MSIMN.exe 6.0.2900.2180

At what point did it crash?

Were you typing in the message body, doing a copy/paste, had just
clicked the send button, etc.?

Wasn't while I was typing so best I remember...when I hit  "Send."

Make sure that your anti-virus is not set to scan outgoing mail.

As long as your anti-virus software is set to scan files as they are
opened, scanning e-mail as it downloads or sends is unnecessary and
prone to problems.

With some anti-virus (and anti-spam) programs, simply disabling the
e-mail scanning function doesn't really disable it.  It simply tells the
program not to flag any messages.  It still processes all the messages
and may still cause send/receive failures.  What you may need to do is
uninstall the anti-virus program, then reinstall it using a custom
install option and unselect the e-mail scanning component for
installation.

I have Avast  (Anti-Virus) Standard Shield and Web Shield running all the
time (except when I install a new program)  so totally removed  my Anti-Spam
Comodo --PC has calmed down a lot.

Thanks for coming back to discuss this further!

Feedback please about whether I really need an Anti-Virus program with the
Web Shield and Standard Shield protection.

General OE Caveats:

- Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages.  Move them to local
folders created for this purpose.

- Empty Deleted Items folder daily.

- Disable Background Compacting [N/A in SP2] and frequently perform a manual
compact of all OE folders while "working offline".  More at
http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm.

- WinXP SP2 only: Do not attempt to close OE via Task Manager or shutdown
your machine if Automatic Compacting is taking place.

- Disable email scanning by your anti-virus application.  It can cause
corruption (i.e., loss of messages), it provides no additional protection,
and even Symantec says it's not necessary:

<QP>
Disabling Email Scanning does not leave you unprotected against viruses that
are distributed as email attachments. Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect scans
incoming files as they are saved to your hard drive, including email and
email attachments. Email Scanning is just another layer on top of this. To
make sure that Auto-Protect is providing the maximum protection, keep
Auto-Protect enabled and run LiveUpdate regularly to ensure that you have
the most recent virus definitions.

Thanks, Robert, have done  some of these things recently, but will check
them all out again to make sure.
