Importing Messages In OE

I'm trying to import Inbox.dbx in Win98 into OE6 from another location. I set up
a new Identity and copied Inbox.dbx to the new file store and deleted Folders.dbx.
When I open OE, it doesn't see the new Inbox.dbx. When I look at the store folder,
I see that OE has created a new file:  Inbox(1).dbx and is using that one for the
Inbox. The attributes on Inbox.dbx are "normal", so it is not a read-only file.

I've imported Inbox.dbx this way before, and it's always worked.  What am I doing
wrong?

Thanks!

I should add that Inbox.dbx is a 300mb file. I know that's too big. I keep telling my
wife to clean out her Inbox. But, could that be the problem?

Is it from OE6?

Frank,

Yes, it's OE6. The Inbox.dbx is a backup copy from a few days ago. I restored the
hard drive image from a two weeks ago, and I'm trying to get OE6 up to date with a
more recent Inbox. By the way, I tried that same procedure with the Sent.dbx file,
and OE doesn't see it (it's a 256mb file). However, I was able to import the Drafts.dbx
(much smaller file) into OEZ6 from a different identity. The problem is that when I
copy Inbox.dbx and Sent.dbx to another identity, OE6 immeditely creates Inbox(1).dbx
and Sent(1).dbx, which are empty files.

If it's, say, Inbox.dbx and it's less that 2 GB and is not corrupted, then
overwriting the existing Inbox.dbx (of which a copy is presumably saved
somewhere) should cause its contents to be displayed.  If it ford not the
there must be file corruption and you will have to use something like
DBXtract or DBXpress (www.oehelp.com) to extract the messages.

If you're wife never compacted all OE folders, let alone Inbox, yes, it
could be a problem.  But then you have to import (not copy/paste) the data
correctly to begin with.

General OE Caveats:

- Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages.  Move them to local
folders created for this purpose.

- Empty Deleted Items folder daily.

- Disable Background Compacting [removed in WinXP SP2] and frequently
perform a manual compact of all OE folders while "working offline".  More at
http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm

- WinXP SP2 only: Do not cancel Automatic Compacting, should it occur, and
do not attempt to close OE via Task Manager or shutdown your machine if
Automatic Compacting is taking place.

- Disable email scanning by your anti-virus application.  It can cause
corruption (i.e., loss of messages), it provides no additional protection,
and even Symantec says it's not necessary:

<QP>
Disabling Email Scanning does not leave you unprotected against viruses that
are distributed as email attachments. Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect scans
incoming files as they are saved to your hard drive, including email and
email attachments. Email Scanning is just another layer on top of this. To
make sure that Auto-Protect is providing the maximum protection, keep
Auto-Protect enabled and run LiveUpdate regularly to ensure that you have
the most recent virus definitions.
