I have the latest OE installed.  When I open any email, the reply, forward
and reply all buttons and toolbar is gone.  If I go to View, toolbars and
click Standard buttons, nothing happens.  If I click on customize, nothing
happens--no window opens to allow me to customize.

I've tried to download again, but it says I have the newest version and
won't let me download.

Possible solutions I'm thinking of:

1.  Creating new identity - not sure how and don't know if I'll lose all
emails and contacts

2.  Uninstalling OE and reinstalling - not sure how to do that either

Does anyone have a suggestion how to get those buttons back?  Thanks!

You may have a damaged identity. File | Identity | Add New Identity. Create
a new one and test it. If all is well, you can import your messages from the
old identity and delete it.

I have no idea how to do that......it asks for a password.  Don't know how to
import either......

You do not have to use a password unless you check the box: Require A
Password.

If the new identity works, to import: File | Import | Messages. Choose
Microsoft Outlook Express 6 and just follow the prompts.

Your current Identity may be damaged, especially if its the default Main
Identity.  Try one or more of your accounts in a new Named Identity (File >
Identities > Add new identity).  Assuming all is well, import messages from
the old Identity before deleting it (File > Identities > Manage Identities).

To avoid such corruption in future:

- Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages.  Move them to local
folders created for this purpose.

- Empty Deleted Items folder daily.

- Disable Background Compacting [N/A in SP2] and frequently perform a manual
compact of all OE folders while "working offline".  More at
http://insideoe.tomsterdam.com/files/maintain.htm.

- Do not attempt to close OE via Task Manager or shutdown your machine if
Automatic Compacting is taking place (WinXP SP2 only).

- Your anti-virus application's email scanning feature can also cause such
corruption.  Disable it.  It provides no additional protection.
