I just installed Virtual PC 2007 under XP SP2, created my new VPC, installed
Vista Business, installed the virtual machine extensions, ran windows update
where it pulled down some 79 updates. It then indicated 2 more updates,
installed those and then no more network. I checked in device manager and
under "VM Additions S3 Trio32/64" it has a "This device cannot find enough
free resources that it can use. (Code 12)" and the same error message under
"Intel 21140- Based PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter(Emulated)".
I removed the devices and scanned for hardware changes which then
reinstalled the same drivers with the same error. I then uninstalled the
virtual machine additions, then reinstalled. This time, I get the same two
previous errors and it can no longer find drivers for my "Multimedia Audio
Controller".
I'm not sure where to proceed from here unless I should go through and
uninstall windows updates one at a time until it works again but then as soon
as they automatically install I'll be hosed again.

There is no Multimedia stuff inside a VPC guest. All it has is an
emulated Soundblaster 16 sound card. Drivers from the host system do
not apply to the VPC guests.

Right..but I wasn't attempting to install my host's drivers under the guest.
It was fine until I got through with vista updates then two of the drivers
from the virtual machine extensions crapped out. Uninstalling and
reinstalling these led to a third driver getting crapped out("This device
cannot find enough free resources").
Late last night I decided to use system restore back to before any updates
where installed(but after the virtual machine extensions where installed),
the drivers started working again. I then did the unthinkable..install one
update at a time. This seemed to work as after the hour or two of installing
everything is stable.

I think the problem was the “ATI PCI Express (3GIO) Filter Driver” got
installed on your system. If you see this again, whatever you do, don't
install it. You can do a search on "code 12" and see the problems that had.
The solution is to uninstall that being sure to check delete the driver,
disable all your usb ports, then reboot.
