I have a linux guest with an XP host.  The guest is in NAT mode.  The
guest gets an IP address and can get to the internet.

The problem is, I want to ssh in from the host, but the IP address of
the guest is not reachable.  In vmware, this works just fine.

What simple thing am I missing?

You can't have host-guest communication using the Shared Networking
with VPC.  VMWare's NAT is different than VPC's, more complex, more
features, more system overhead.

Well that's not good.

Horses for courses. If VMWare works for you, fine. If you want to use VPC
instead you will have to change the network config to get both Internet
access and file sharing between host and guest.
