Virtual machines can support up to two virtual COM ports - open up the help
and look for "Configure a COM port for a virtual machine"

Virtual PC has always supported serial ports, from the original Windows
version 4 by Connectix (2001).  Virtual Server has serial port support.

VMWare Workstation has had serial ports since at least version 3 (2001), and
I'm pretty sure that version 2 had it as well, but that was back in 2000 when
I last used version 2.  VMWare Server also supports them.

I didn't check to verify, but I think all of the common current vm apps
support serial ports.

Is there some specific issue with serial ports you ran into that led you to
this?

I don't know where you checked because com ports *have* been supported
in both VPC and VMWare since very long....

However I have detected a problem with the handling in VPC2007 that
makes some applications in the guest have problem seeing incoming data
through Windows events. I discovered this during the VPC2007 beta
phase, but too late for MS to put in a fix.

So my advice is that you should use VPC2004 for these guests rather
than VPC2007. VPC2004 and VPC2007 can co-exist on the same host
provided you:

1) Install VPC2007 first (its installer will either "upgrade" an
existing VPC2004 installation or require you to uninstall it manually
first).

2) Install VPC2004 into a different folder than the one the installer
suggests (not the same as VPC2007 is in)

3) Don't run both VPC2004 and VPC2007 at the same time.

I also believe VPC2004 comes with better support for older MS
operating systems than VPC2007 does in terms of additions.
