Mouse is either jumping all over the place or non existant (alt brings it
back) I cannot click on radio buttons to finish installing XP, I was doing
it with 'Tab' 'Enter' but now I am at the registration page and it won't
work with tab, enter, can't seem to get past it and anyway its pointless to
set it up then not be able to use the mouse.
I am using Vista Business. Infomation keeps telling me to install additions
but require that you have the OS working, thats a big help.

Is it desktop or laptop?  What make and model?  Please, a few specifics.

If it is a laptop, have you run the laptop hotfix in the Program
Files\Microsoft Virtual PC folder?

What kind of keyboard?  Wireless?

No Colin, not a wireless keyboard,  your basic cheap OEM keyboard, mouse was
optical wireless but I thought that was the problem so i hooked back up the
wired mouse.  Went into XP control panel using keyboard (what a total pain)
and found that the xp setup for mouse is PS2, would be part of the problem?
Another question - if the 'additions' needed to be added for it to work how
come on my console under 'actions' it does not have this --

"On the Action menu of the virtual machine, click Install or Update Virtual
Machine Additions".

there is no Install OR Update ability or box or whatever.

....this is driving me nuts, I know its something simple but I am at a loss
as to how to correct it and I have forgotten all I used to know about the
bad old 'before mouse days'.

Suggest that you hit (right alt) + enter - so you can see xp with mouse.

Then use alt key to allow moving the mouse onto the guest - then install add
ons

trust me I've tried that, the minute you click on the guest to do anything
mouse disappears no matter what you do,  XP is loading great, just isn't
accessing or seeing mouse.

I'm sorry for my ignorance but install add-on's where? The console is not
showing any option to install or update & XP is showing no evidence that it
knows its on a virtual disk.

evidently you have to have XP open to access the Actions install.........I
was trying everything BUT that, now I have to figure out how to actually
install old VISTA unfriendly programs in it, ah well.........

The same way you would install any old XP program into XP:
- Insert the CD and click OK on the autorun windows that appears
or
- Run the Setup.exe or Install.exe on the CD or in the folder you
downloaded it into.

Your virtual machine behaves *exactly* like a physical computer
running XP. Stop thinking of it as a part of your Vista host PC, it is
not...

OK, when you hit alt enter you should see a menu bar - if not your guest is
taking entire screen -underneath  is the host with mouse - you will have to
resize the guest so you can see the menu bar - might need short cut keys to
do this.- dont have them on hand - search ?

dont give up !

Thank you so much for your help, it WAS taking entire screen and locking up
everything, now that additions is installed mouse is working, but if you
would be so kind to tell me how to do i get programs (like paint shop proX)
to install on guest and guest only.  Where do I put the install programs so
that XP guest sees them and I can install them?
I apologise if this is the stupid question of the year...........

All of your problems will go away as soon as you stop thinking that a
virtual machine is not a real machine...

How would you install <insert application> on a physical machine? Well, you
could download it from the web, you could insert the installation media and
run setup etc...

Exactly the same with a virtual machine...

Mark, I'm sorry but its NOT the same, I'll figure it out but the files and
folders I see on the guest are WHERE on the host?
You have to really dumb it down for the likes of me.  I'm trying to take a
.exe from the host and put it on the guest, or at least somewhere the guest
can see it and I can open it.........the CD will work just fine (thanks
Colin) to do that but as for the rest (documents, etc) I'm having a hard
time wrapping my head around just where the frack they are.

....ah well I'm off to figure it out, thanks MUCH for your time.

It really is, and there's no need to apologise...

When you install software on a virtual machine, it has not the slightest
idea that it's not being installed on a physical machine, because it doesn't
need to...

They're in the virtual hard disk file...

Like I said, forget that one of the machines is a virtual machine.

Let's suppose that you have two physical machines, machine A and machine B.
On machine A is an executable that you want machine B to access - how would
you do it...?

It's really just simple networking...

Assuming you are installing from cd, you insert the cd in the host's drive.
If the virtual machine is in focus (the active window) it should just
capture the cd all by itself so click on the virtual machine and then insert
the cd in the host's cd drive.  If you get an autoplay window on the host
instead, cancel it and then capture the host's cd drive with the guest's cd
menu.

You get the menu by right clicking on the cd icon in the tray on the lower
left of the virtual machine's window.  There must be media in the host's
drive for the drive letter to show up in the guest's list of drives you can
capture.  Once you capture the drive the cd should autoplay.

As for the Install or Update additions item on the Action menu, it will
install the adds if not already installed and update if adds have previously
been installed.  The installer knows not to overwrite files that are newer
than the ones you are installing.  It is all automatic.

thank you so much, I clicked on "capture' earlier but was nervous about it
interferring with the host. Then I saw it in the files.

You are great at explaining things and I so appreciate it.
