Relatively new version of Vista Ultimate. Very few added programs. Try to
install Virtual PC and get the above error. I've searched the web but have
found no solution. I've tried 'Run as Administrator', no help.

There are two versions of Virtual PC, one if a 32 bit the other is a 64 bit
version. Are you sure you've got the correct version? Have you tried to
delete and then re-download in case your download is corrupt?

Yes, I have the 32 bit Vista and the 32 bit download. Yes, I deleted it once
and redownloaded it, same problem. I also tried 'Run' with the same result.

Of course, I meant to say Setup.exe was not a valid win32 application, but
it is the setup for Virtual PC. I am wondering if any Setup program is going
to have the same problem or if it's just Virtual PC.

I really want to use Virtual PC, since I have quite a few programs that
don't run on Vista.

After you download the x86 version, what are you doing to install it?  You
should just doubleclick the icon (even though it looks like a disc).

Thanks, but I'm no neophyte. I've been using Windows since before 3.0. We are
not talking about cockpit error here. The instructions say to download it
then launch it, which is what I did.

And I don't use double click anyway. If I hadn't clicked it, it would not
have given the error message.

This is related to Vista, or some manifestation of its awkward security
implementation. I HAVE turned off UAC, however.

All I can tell you is that I have never had a problem installing and running
VPC 2007 on any of my Vista x86 or x64 systems.  You may encounter
permissions issues with some game cd's or with drag and drop between guest
and host but shouldn't when installing VPC.

By the way, what cpu are you using?

The computer is a 2 month old Gateway Quad Core Q6600 with 4 g memory. It is
little more than stock, with upgraded video card, memory, and Ultimate. All
drivers have been updated and BIOS flashed. I don't even have office
installed yet...

I have a lot of stuff on my XP computer that won't run in Vista, hence a
Virtual XP in Vista.

It doesn't seem to be a permission issue, at least not with that error
message. I am admin, and I've tried running Setup as Administrator, but that
doesn't change anything...

That message is almost always a corrupt download...

It still goes back to what Paul said. More than likely it's a corrupt
download.

Sorry, i hit the wrong button so might have sent a 'blank' reply.

I had the same problem ("Virtual PC not a valid win32 application").

When i checked, my SETUP.EXE file i had downloaded, was a different size to
the one on the download page.

I tried downloading again, this time all 30Mb downloaded and SETUP works
fine!!

Try downloading again, but compare the file sizes.

Apparently, that is the problem. I was getting only 127K of the download, and
incorrectly assumed that was just a 'bootstrap' to get the rest of the setup
routine. I'm used to using 'run' instead of 'save', so it just didn't occur
to me that the whole 30 meg should download.

One of the few programs that I DID install was Microsoft's beta Silverlight
download assistant. After all, how could MS screw that up? I uninstalled it,
and now the whole file has downloaded....29 seconds.

Thanks to all, and especially Skallamoosh...

You know what was the problem for me? I got that same message but then i realized that the file was like spuuosed to be 30.5 mb but the downloaded file size was 29.1 mb. So i guessed that the download was corrupted and then I downloaded the file from filehippo. now it works great!
