Plotting or graphing program

First I'm apologizing for what may be a posting in
the wrong group. This one seemed a possibility.

I need a fairly simple program for taking tables of data
and making X-Y plots, in XP. I have an old program, left over
from DOS days, but I can't get screen capture to work with
it, running it from command prompt or via Windows Explorer.
Search yielded GNUPLOT but its 'Help' is in a .PDF over 200
pages long, and its capabilities, while surely wonderful,
are not what I need.

I did try running Virtual PC with WIN 98, and,
again, I can get the plot on screen, but I haven't been
able to capture it. The suggestion has been made, that
it is difficult to capture in 'full screen' mode.

Hi,

Using Virtual PC, you should be able to select the relevant area of your
screen and then copy/paste it into an image program on the host computer

If you are simply looking to create the graphs (not necessarily using a DOS
program in Virtual PC), then GNU Octave might be of assistance.  There is a
Windows version here:
http://octave.sourceforge.net/

Thanks, Jonathan. The graph appears full screen. Nothing else on
the screen, no toolbars, no dropdowns, noplace to click or copy or paste.

The GNUPLOT I saw was a Sherman tank with 200 page .JPG instructions,
and I was afraid I might not live long enough to find out how to make
a simple X-Y plot from a two-column set of data. I'll look at the
OCTAVE, maybe it's less formidable.

Jonathan, creating the graphs and getting them out to a file
are the two steps I need to do, preferably in XP. I can create
beautiful graphs with an old GRAFMAKER but I can't capture that
screen, not in XP and not in 98 running under VPC. But I have no
trouble capturing more modern stuff in XP or in 98 in VPC.

As for Octave, I thought I saw what I needed, and downloaded a file,
and it is a zipped file with a .gz extension that I haven't found a
way to unzip (hint)......

BTW, Jonathan, the .gz file is small. I'm attaching it here
(but I don't know if it will pass thru the NG system).

(plot-1.0.4.tar/gz

in case you'd like to unzip it and send it back to me.

Hi,

The Octave installer is a setup exe:
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=2888&package_id=40078

If you have a program working on XP, try:
Making the plot
Pressing alt and printscreen on your keyboard
Pasting the result into i.e. Paint

Though this is beyond the scope of Virtual PC.  To tie it back in, if you
have a program running in DOS on Virtual PC, you should be able to click and
drag (to select) the area of the virtual machine in Virtual PC, then select
"Edit" and "Copy."  Again, pasting the result into an image application such
as Paint

If it's a DOS program you can try running it in DOSBox http://dosbox.sourceforge.net
Then hit CTRL+F5 to capture a screenshot or CTRL+ALT+F5 to capture a
movie

I use the freeware Gadwin Printscreen v4.1 on a WindowsXPpe guest with
no problem at all. One of the things I like about gadwin is that it
allows me to set the key I want to use for prinytscreen and set where I
want the printscreen to go (ie. file or printer).

Thank you....I downloaded and installed and tried it out.
It captures beautifully........that's the good news.
The bad news is that the result of the capture is only the
background dark screen on which the desired graph is
drawn. The graph.........no sign of it.

This makes at least the fifth nice program with the same
results. The image is there.......but not to be grabbed!

Are you grabbing inside the guest or in the host?
I have found that it is impossible to make a Window screenshot (Alt
PrintScreen) of the VPC guest window from the host. I always therefore
use plain "PrintScreen" to capture everything and this works only if
*another* window than the VPC guest window is active on the host.
Then I paste it into a paint program and cut away the excess parts
outside the VPC window.
*Thus* at least works even if it is kind of clumsy.

Hey, Bo, maybe you've led me to something different that I can try.
Clumsy, shmumsy, I'd be delighted to go that route if it works.
But to answer your first question, I'm not sure. I *think* I've
tried it every which way already. You've given me something more
to investigate, and it will take me a day or two, but I'll follow
it further for sure. And thanks so much!!

Are you sure . . . I know that sounds like a dumb question, but before
I typed my response to your article, I tried it in a Windows window, a
Windows window with a small DOS window and a full screen DOS window and
all 3 ways worked fine.

I just tried it again, and it seems to work fine.

Hey, CJ, your question isn't dumb, but the answer is,
I've tried it every which way I could think of, with
the result I indicated. I'm getting the impression that the
background is what is being captured somehow, but what is
written on it is lost somehow. There has been a hint here
that it is written in 'fullscreen mode' and that's why it hasn't
been captured, but there's nothing I can do with that canned
program to find out.

And it's not a VPC problem because in plain old XPHome/SP2 I
get identical results.

Thanks for tryuing, by all means!!!!

Is the problem specific to that one DOS program, or is it with any DOS
program that you run in full screen mode?

If it is that specific program, would you mind telling us what program
it is?

I will check my settings for Gadwin and post them later and you can see
if they match your settings.

CJ, I'm delighted to answer both questions.
Other DOS programs work perfectly. CtrlPrtScrn captures the
whole screen, and Paste brings them on-screen in Irfanview.

And the program whose screen is uncapturable is GRAFMAKER
by long-defunct BVE Engineering. If you'd like a copy of
that complete program, I have it in easily installable
form on a single 3.5" floppy.

Hi Bill,

I have never heard of the application before. Could you e-mail an image
of it at; kalekseishaken@<mailplace>.com (You know Yahoo). I will take
a look at it tonight or tomorrow morning.

Thanks, CJ. I sent you the info off list. Look forward to
your positive or negative results!
