or do I have to have Virtual PC first?  The brief instructions sound as if
it's all in the one download, but I'm not sure.  Do I need to download and
install Virtual PC first and then the VPC for IE8?

I understand this will not mess with the main part of the computer.  Is it
necessary to back up all data first just in case?

Thanks!

It never hurts to back up your important data.

VPC is itself a free download from:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=04D26402-3199-48A3-AFA2
-2DC0B40A73B6&displaylang=en

Download and install VPC.  Then download the Internet Explorer Application
Compatibility VPC Image (IE8_VPC.EXE) from:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=21eabb90-958f-4b64-b5f1
-73d0a413c8ef&DisplayLang=en

It is an executible file.  Run the executible to uncompress the virtual hard
drive it contains.

Start VPC and use the New Virtual Machine Wizard to create a new virtual
machine.  When you get to the question about whether to create a new vhd or
use an existing one, select to use an existing one and then browse to the
vhd file you downloaded and expanded and select it.

Unfortunately, it didn't work.  I followed your instructions to the letter,
but when I got to the Virtual Machine wizard and said existing one and
navigated to the directory with the files unzipped, I got an error that the
file didn't exist.  The file is called XP SP2 with IE8.vhd and it's
something like 1.6 gb.  How can that not exist?

I really didn't know what else to do but Cancel.  Any thoughts?

Thanks again!

Okay .. there was a choice to use existing settings to create a new one and
that appears to work .. at least it finds the disk.  Now it's asking me to
create a new virtual disk or not and NONE is highlighted.  I'm worried that
if I leave it to none, it will take over my hard drive and I'll lose
everything.  So I'm guessing I want to use the new Virtual Hard Disk wizard
and create a new one .. but I really don't know if that's right either.

Not sure what to do .. probably cancel until I can get some further advice.

Thanks,
Nancy

Okay .. I have it working .. I guess.  Turns out I thought you were telling
me to use an existing one in the first part of the wizard but you meant the
second part after I have created a new virtual machine.  First time users.
honestly!   ;)

Only problem now is I have IE 8 beta up .. but it won't connect to the
internet.  The settings say they are using my Network adapter .. or so it
thinks.  But it doesn't connect.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Nancy

0. First move the downloaded vhd file to a location such as
C:\VirtualPC\Vista

1. Start VPC2007. The Virtual PC Console will show up

2. Click the "New..." button to start the wizard

3. Next

4. Create a virtual machine, then Next

5. Give name of the new virtual machine (ex: VistaTest) and browse
into the directory from step 0 above. The full path to a vmc file will
now show. Next

6. Operating system = Windows Vista.
Next

7. Select "Adjusting the RAM" and enter as much as you can (half of
what you have in your host for example, Vista needs lots of RAM).
Next

8. Now select the entry "An existing virtual hard disk".
Next

9. Now browse to the location of the disk from step 0 and select it.
The box "Virtual hard disk location" will now show the full path.

10. Also check the box "Enable undo disks" because it makes it
possible for you to experiment with Vista and then discard what you
did and go back to a previous state very easily.
Next

11. Review data and click Finish.

12. You are now back on the initial console page, but now there will
be one guest listed in the left column. Select it. Then click Start.

13. Now away you go, the downloaded Vista trial will start running and
you can log in and test it out.

Thanks, Bo .. it's not the Vista version I was trying out . it was the IE8
XP one.  I got it working .. thanks very much for that.  However, IE8 that
is installed in the new virtual window will not connect to the internet.
The console says it's using my existing network connection .. but it doesn't
connect.

Any thoughts as to why?

Thanks!

That's what I thought too .. it's Windows Firewall and I allowed Virtual PC
.. but it doesn't work when I try to browse to something in IE8.  Just can't
connect.

This also looks like it's just going to be allowing the browser .. I can't
see the option to install any other programs in the virtual space.  Is this
just going to give me a different browser and nothing else?

Thanks for all your help!

In the settings for that Virtual Machine, go to the Networking
settings, then switch "Adapter 1" to :Shared Networking (NAT).

That setting works best at times, depending on what your host NIC is.

Bingo!  Thanks so much, Robert!

Last question .. I promise!  :)
Can I install other software on this?  Using the IE8 image was supposed to
be an easy way to get VPC and an OS installed .. but I don't see the ability
to install other programs .. which I need to do to keep some testing
programs separate from the mainstream computer.

Does this version allow that?  Or do I have to install an OS on VPC from a
disk to do what I want?

Thanks!

I think you can, and it would be just like installing it on a real PC,
just make sure you're in the VM when you put in the CD.  You may have
to "Capture" the drive, but it should work.
