Hi folks,

As a developer I have installed Virtual PC as Microsoft suggest its a better
solution than multi booting one PC.

I have a problem connecting to an SQL database on the host.

I can use and test Applications if I install SQL Server 2005 Express in each
of the VM's but keeping all the db's in sync is a real pain. When trying to
acces the Host db, all attempts fail to connect.

Yes I know I can install a database on another physical PC but thats not
always possible.

Has anyone got any suggestions on how to overcome this??

Thanks

Assuming that you've got network connectivity between the 2 it should
work. Need more info:
Host OS, VM OS?
Are you connected to a network?  If so, what do you have selected for
networking options under the VM?
Have you set an exception in the firewall to let SQL out to the VM?
Can you ping the host PC from the VM?

Hi Steve,

I can use either Windows Xp Pro SP2 or SP3, or Vista Premium as the host wth
the same result.
Yes I am connected to a network and I can Access SQL 2005 Servers elsewhere
on the network from the VM. Its just trying to keep it local that fails.
For the purpose of this exercise and resolving the issue, I've turned off
all firewalls. but still not working.

Host IP 192.168.1.100
VM IP 192.168.1.111
Can ping both ways without any problems

I'm not an MVP but been playing with Windows since 3.0 and this one has got
me stumped.

I used virtual machines for years as an IBM Mainframe VM Sysprog but doesn't
relate although I understand the principle.

I look forward to any pointers as I'm not ready to give up yet.

Thanks

Peter.

Can you you access any shares, i.e. \\hostPC?
Is the host x64 by chance, with 64bit SQL? I'm wondering if that is
the issue with the 32bit OS on the VM?

How have you got SQL2005 Express configured?  What kind (if any) errors
are you getting when you attempt to connect to sql server?  Did you
configure it to accept IP address or named pipes?  What kind of account
access did you set up (Windows Auth. or SQL account)?

hi pweegar

Yes its all configured correctly. I use TCP IP for connections and its set
to support both local and remoted connections. The SQL server on the host (32
bit) can be accessed locally on the host and across the network from other
PCs so no probs there.

The VM can see shares available from other PCs on the network and can copy
to and from using them. It can also see shares on the host and access them so
networking is working just fine. The Host can also see and access the VM
Shares.

Suports mixed mode, both SQL auth and  account. Neither works.

So now after checking everything and finding as above, as if by magic it now
works at least on one of the XP hosts (XP SP3). I'll try in on Vista Ultimate
and XP SP2.

Thanks

Peter
