HELP, PLEASE!!
I am trying to install RedHat 9 on the Connectix Virtual
PC 5.2 (acquired by Microsoft). During installation
video is superb, however when I complete installation and
select a monitor things begin to go south...
Upon reboot after installation I receive the GRUB screen
which shows properly, after selection an oblong black
screen with white pixels (scroll bars on bottom & side).
I can sort of make out what it says, but I can't get the
video adjusted to show up properly (don't know how to
select a different video setting from GRUB screen).
Everything works great throughout setup...
Installing from 3 CD set, not images. VPC captures CD
drive without issue...
Hardware:
HP Pavilion zd7030us

-DVD+RW
-WXGA+ display (1440x990)
-nVidia 5600 (128MB)
-Microsoft Intellimouse Optical (USB)

I got the exact same problem. I was installing and seeing Linux for the
first time and so have no idea what I am supposed to do. Quite disappionted,
not that its any fault fo Linux, or MS at that as I understand that it is
not supported. Anyone got any ideas how to fix? It took hours and hours to
install and I don't really fancy installing again!
Cheers

I believe I have resolved the problem. I reinstalled,
selecting 1024x768 Laptop display, and 16bit color depth.
Hey, it works! :)

Greetings,
VPC 5.2 and consequently VPC 2004 only supports 8, 16 and 32 bit color
depths. Linux by default sets itself up for 24bits. Thats why you get a
wonky screen.

When the GRUB screen appears, type "e" to edit the GRUB config.
Use the arrow keys to highlight the kernel line.
Type "e" to edit that line.
Add " 3" to the end of the line, for example:
kernel /vmlinuz-2.4... ro root=LABEL=/ 3
Press Enter to accept the changes, and then press "b" to boot.
This should make Linux boot into text mode instead of graphic mode.
Login as root.
Type in the following command:
redhat-config-xfree86 --reconfig
Wait for the graphical screen to appear, and then select your desired
resolution (800x600) and color depth, click OK, and OK again. Now reboot
and you should be all set.
Hope that helps...

If you've got a boot disk that you created during
install, you can also just type "linux 3" at the boot
prompt.
Note that if you are in single user mode ("linux 1",
or "linux s") I don't think the X server gets started so -
-reconfig won't work.
Oddly, though, it won't accept a resolution higher than
800x600. If I pick, say, 1024x768 it seems OK and says I
have to restart X, but when I do (or if I reboot) it is
still 800x600. I tried settings 8MB video ram for the S3
card rather than the default 4MB, but that didn't have
any effect. So I'm stuck with a rather low-resolution
screen...

I'm wondering now if it is my choice of monitor. Does
VPC emulate some sort of monitor or does it use the host
monitor? Do I need the actual driver for the real
physical monitor (not sure I have one for Linux), or can
I use some sort of generic but reasonably-capable driver
that will let me use a sensible (i.e. 1024 or higher)
screen size?

You could try using "Generic VESA" instead of the s3 drivers and see if you
can get higher resolution using them. It may happen that the s3 drivers only
find 4 mb of vram.

you can't use the default 24-bit color for X-Windows.
There are installation instructions for RH9 under VPC 5.2 here:
