All,

I have a host running XP Pro SP1. I am running a guest Windows 2003 Enterprise Server. I can ping between the two when I am connected to my router via a wired connection.

I am running SQL Server 2000 on my host machine. Is there a way to connect to SQL Server from my guest machine when I'm NOT connected to the router? NOTE: I CAN connect when connected to the router.

I am looking at it from the standpoint of doing field demonstrations where a network is not available. If I were to buy a little portable router, would that solve my problems?

I have three network adapters installed right now on the guest. They are (in the following order of installation):

1) Shared Networking (NAT) - I'm not sure if I need this as I really don't know what it does. However I thought it might help with my issue.
2) Wired network card
3) Wireless network card

The NAT adapter has a static IP address. The wired and wireless are both DHCP.

Thanks!

Jeff

You are seeing normal functionality. The Host NIC has to
be active in order for the connectivity to work the way
you are configured now.

To do the same thing without that problem:
1) Install the Microsoft Loopback adapter on the Host -
instructions are in the VPC Help
2) Assign a static IP to the Loopback adapter on the
host in the subnet you want for your "disconnected
network"
3) Set the VM to use the Microsoft Loopback adapter
4) Assign a static IP address to the Guest NIC in the
same subnet you used in step 2
