I have created a 'base' virtual machine of winXP, this went onto the domain
named VIRTUAL_PC. I then created a number of difference disks which I thought
I could have as different machine names so they behave as completely
different computers on the domain but I rename a computer from one of these
difference virtual machines and the VIRTUAL_PC name changes in the AD.
Why can't all my virtual machines have their own name on the domain?

You need to run Sysprep or NewSID before adding a computer to the
domain from the same image,

You need to change the machine's System Identifier (SID) as well as the
name. Several utilities can do this such as Sysprep, NewSID, or SidGen
