My son is a college freshman.  We upgraded his computer to XP Pro from Home
Edition at the school's recommendation.  He had a crash, and we had to use
the HP Recovery to return his computer to it's original state, but without
formatting (he lost programs, but not data).  When we went to reinstall XP
Pro, we found that we had the original box and the cd, but not the key (I
assume it was on the sleeve or box the cd came in).  Reading through posts
here, it seems we need to contact Microsoft.  I went to the contact support
page, & clicked the box for email support, but got an error that the post
could not be found.  What do I do now?

You're really in the wrong group.  This is the Windows
64-bit group.

Where key was/is located really depends on the version of XP
Pro you have/had.  The Retail version and the Educational
version usually have the key on an orange label in the
folder the CD was in.  The OEM version usually have
blue/green label on the back of the booklet with the OEM
version.

If you had the Retail or Educational version you should call
Microsoft.

You're definitely not going to find a key in this group.
This is not the right place for your problem.

Also, the key could be on a sticker, stuck on your computer (back, or
bottom in case of a laptop).

As I mentioned, this was an upgrade to the Home Edition which came
preinstalled on the computer.  Recovering the computer reset it back to the
original Home Edition version.  In August, before he left for college, we
upgraded my son's computer with the Academic version, which I purchased.  I
now want to reinstall it, but don't have the product key.  I was hoping it
was stored somewhere on the computer where I could recover it.  I've tried
emailing MS throught their support page, but keep getting an error - maybe
their system is down?

There is no way to recover the key of the Pro version after
you restored to the Home version.

Look up the phone number and call Microsoft!

You will never accomplish anything waiting for email!

And, this is still the wrong place for your problem - call
Microsoft!

USE THE TELEPHONE AND CALL MICROSOFT!!!!!
