"Always Use This Program To Open This File" Check Box

When viewing different file type extentions, I unintentionally associated a
file type with a program, but I don't remember which file type it was (the
program was Notepad).  Since it wasn't given a "file type," it won't appear
in the file associations list.

1) How can I view a list of all registered file associations so I can look
through it and see what is incorrect.

2)  How can I permanently change the "Always use this program to open this
file" option so that the check box is always unchecked, so that the only way
to associate a file type with a program is by intentionally checking the box?

Thanks,

V Harris

1. Explorer-View-Folder Options-File Types.

2. You may find a Registry hack to achieve this but you can avoid it
if you don't use Open With to allocate associations. Do it with
Explorer-View-Folder Options-File Types instead.

1. The problem is that whatever the association is is not viewable in the
"File Types" list, as it was inadvertently created through "Open With" rather
than set up in "File Types."

See this for an explanation of how this happens:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;166320

2.  I didn't intend to create the association using "Open With," and I'm
hoping to avoid a similar problem in the future by permanently turning off
the check in the checkbox for "Always use this program to open this file"
option.  I hope a registry hack will do this.  Do you know if there is a MS
newsgroup that focuses on the registry?

Thanks

1. Article 166320 quotes a situation that is EXTREMELY rare and it
does not give you a method of removing it.
Remove it by deleting the Registry key HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.ext

2. If you never use "Open With", then you avoid the problem. There is
no need to ever use Open With. If you insist on a Registry hack, then
I guess I can find it, or you can search in Google Groups, as I know
it has been discussed over the years.
There is no MS newsgroup that focuses on the Win95 Registry.

When I run regedit, There doesn't appear to be any such registry key [.ext].
Could it be under some other  registry key?

Sometimes I want to execute the file, sometimes I want to view the file,
sometimes I want to edit the file, etc.  How is this best handled without
using the "Open with" option?  Sometimes Quickview is available with a
right-mouse click, but sometimes it is not.  And I don't think "Notepad" is
ever available with a right-mouse click.

Thanks.

You substitute your extension (which you don't mention) for ".ext" in
my example.

If you want Notepad or some other editor in the right-click menu, then
create a shortcut to it in C:\Windows\SendTo and it will appear in the
"Send To" menu.
