Hi,

I am trying to install Win95 on a new, clean,  30gig hard drive and
need some advice please.

Computer is 750mhz Compaq Presario which had a complete hard drive
crash.  I know I must partition and format new store-bought hard
drives, but this is my first attempt at this.  I thought I had done
this properly by instructions of the following this link I found on
google:

http://www.putergeek.com/disk_partitioning/

My problem, is after partioning then formatting this HD, I get the
following error while trying to install Windows95:

"ScanDisk cannot work with drive D. Files might be open in Drive D or
another disc utility program might be working with Drive D.  Or, if
drive D is a compressed drive, a network drive may be mapped over
drive D's host drive.
Close all open files on drive D, disconnect from any network drives,
and quit any disk-utility programs that might be working with drive D.
Then run ScanDisk again."

This is the first day I've discovered this newsgroup.  A google search
on  "microsoft.public.win95.setup FAQ" told me to "check the
newsgroup" for possible FAQ info.  Since I don't see any FAQ location
here today (my first day) to check first,  I hope it's proper usenet
netiquette here to ask this question.

Can anyone give me some advice, please? Or guide me in the correct
direction?   Thanks!

If you are trying to install the original version of Windows 95
(files dated 7-11-95), you must make sure the drive being
used is partitioned with a 16 bit FAT.  See
