Step 1. Run FDisk and partition the hardisk.
Step 2. Format the harddisk as a bootable DOS disk.
Step 3. If installing from a CD-ROM, install software to enable the
computer to read the Windows CD-ROM.
Step 4. Run Windows' Setup program.
You can get a bootableYou can obtain a Windows Startup Disk at:
http://www.bootdisk.com/
This disk should have on it an appropriate version of FDisk and
Format. Boot the computer with the bootable disk in drive A: and enter
the command "fdisk". Specify that you want a primary DOS partition.
Exit from FDisk and shut down the computer. Again, boot the computer
with the bootable disk in drive A: and enter the command "format c:
/s". This will format the harddisk and install the files needed to
make the harddisk bootable.
Add your CD-ROM driver to the boot disk. The boot disk might be drive
C: or it might be a Windows Startup Disk that you can insert into
drive A:.
The CD-ROM driver will normally have a name with the letters CD in it
and it will have the extension .SYS. One way to get a CD-ROM driver is
to run the installation program that came with the CD-ROM. Also, you
can usually get a driver from the web site of the companmy that made
the CD-ROM. Or you can search your C: drive for *CD*.SYS.
Using Notepad or any word processor, make a text file, name it
CONFIG.SYS and add it to the boot disk. This file should look like
this, but with the name of your CD-ROM driver in place of
CDDRIVER.SYS:
DEVICE=CDDRIVER.SYS /D:MSCD000
DEVICE=HIMEM.SYS
Add a copy of MSCDEX.EXE to the boot disk. You can get MSCDEX from the
folder C:\Windows/Command.
Using Notepad or any word processor, make a text file, name it
AUTOEXEC.BAT and add it to the bootdisk. It should look like this:
MSCDEX.EXE /D:MSCD000

Bill: I have a similar problem. I reformatted my hard
drive on a win 95 machine (which I had upgraded to win 98
via an upgrade CD. Anyway, I no longer can find the Win 95
cd. When I try to setup using the win 98 upgrade cd, it
tell me I need Microsoft Windows. I have MS DOS 6.0 on
floppies from a much older PC. Will Win 98 upgrade install
over DOS 6.0, or does it require Win 95?
Can you think of any other way around this? I have
contacted Gateway, but my guess is that they no longer
have any Win 95 cd's. Does anyone out there have a full
Win 95 version they would like to sell for cheap? I do
have my Win 95 certificate of authenticity if that helps.
Thanks.
Jeff

It has been so long since this issue was current that I am not sure I
remember the solution. But try this -- Use DOS to create a C:\Windows
folder. Put any file into this folder and name it win.com. Then try to
setup the Win98 upgrade.
If this doesn't work, maybe someone else in the newsgroup has a better
memory than I do.
