I had to install W98 on an old W95 machine in order to
transfer files from old to new XP box using a network.
Once all the files were transferred, I could not access
some of the W95 files so I restored the whole W95 system
from tape backup. Now the old computer will not start up
in Safe Mode. I can get to dos prompt and dos prompt in
safe mode but no Windows in safe mode. I get error
message that the system cannot find ntkern.vxd and
mm***.vxd and one more .vxd file.

Tried reinstalling W95 from Disc and get same.

What is up with that?

Philo, thanks for the input.
What does it mean?
Tried reinstalling W95 this A.M.
All was fine until reboot, then said
that System.ini files were corrupt or
missing. The same old NTKERN.VXD and
the rest of them.
Those must be left over from the W98
install as I do believe that W95 did
not automatically install USB support.
They had to be installed separately.
Maybe not.

Google on RAM and DIAGNOSTIC or similar and you will get plenty of hits,
such as
www.simmtester.com/PAGE/products/doc/docinfo.asp
www.pcworld.com/downloads/file_description/ 0,fid,20541,00.asp

The other option is to remove one or more RAM modules, or replace with a
known-good unit to see if the problem goes away, or at least changes.  This
will indicate if RAM is faulty.  A good system diagnostic that tests other
things, like the disk and disk controller, would also be worthwhile.

Start the computer in DOS and rename the "c:\windows\system\vmm32"
directory to "vmm32bak".  Create a new "c:\windows\system\vmm32"
directory and extract fresh copies of the following files to it from
your Windows 95 CD.

qemmfix.vxd
mrci2.vxd
ifsmgr.vxd
