I have a pentium II laptop pc with win95 installed plus
later versions of office etc.  It has become corrupted; it
sometimes works and sometimes not.  I want to clear
everything down and reformat the hard disk.  then I want
to reinstall from square one.  Is there anywhere that I
can get some instructions on how to do this?
Regards, Jem

Please don't ask the same question in multiple newsgroups, as it just makes
more work for everyone.  Answered in general discussion.

The first thing to do is to make sure you have a Windows CD-ROM
together with the product's authorization code. If you do not have
this code with the CD-ROM, then start Windows, go to Start/Run and
enter "regedit". Search the Registry for the "productid" and write it
down.

The second thing to do is to make backup copies of any documents you
cannot afford to lose -- letters, financial records, etc.

My personal advice is not to reformat the harddisk unless there is no
other choice. Reformatting is an extreme, last option. I would first
try reinstalling Windows on top of itself. Often, the Windows Setup
program can repair problems.

If reinstalling on top of the current Windows does not solve the
problems, you can reinstall Windows into a new empty folder. You will
then have to reinstall all of your applications, but these reinstalls
will proceed rather quickly because much info is already on the
harddisk. By reinstalling, you insure against the possibility that
there is something on the harddisk that you really need.

The following articles explain how to install Windows into a new
folder:

How to Reinstall Windows 95 to a New Folder [142096]

How to Install Windows 98 to a New Folder [193902]

However, before reinstalling Windows 98, you should first try running
the System File Checker. Go to Start/Run and enter “sfc”.

Information about reinstalling is also on www.windowsreinstall.com.
