I was deleting files from an old 486 so I could give it
away. Now I cant start up Windows and get a error message
'disc error or system disc error'

boot up with a floppy from the exact OS youhave installed
then issue the command   sys C:
your machine will at least bootup now...possibly just to the C:
prompt

I have a similar problem.  I am able to boot to the HD;
but cannot get 95 to start.  I cannot re-install 95
because my Thinkpad does not recognize my cd-rom drive.
