Well the patch may not work for W95A. Maybe the docs @ Compaq say
differently.
But OTOH it was written for W95B era problems.
Your last option is to slow the processor down to <350 Hz if it has
M/board jumpers that will go that low, install & reset the speed.
Spend ~$20 for W95B.

Open the file with WinZip, extract "esdi_506.pdr" and "scsiport.pdr"
to a floppy and copy them to the "Windows\System\Iosubsys" directory
of the problem computer. Then remove the floppy and restart.

Thanx, Ben, but I can't get into the link you sent. "Page
cannot be found". What's the trick to that?

Ben,
This is an executable. How do I 'unzip' it and extract
the files you mention? Just opening it gives an error
message, "This is not the right version of Windows"
Thanx,
Sean

Download an evaluation version of WinZip or copy the
"amdk6upd.exe" file to the "c:\" folder and run it with the
"/c" switch.
c:\amdk6upd.exe /c

Hello again,
I extracted the two files you mentioned and placed them
in the IOSUBSYS folder and Windows 95 started
beautifully. I then proceeded with a Windows 98 upgrade,
installed some of the old drivers for the monitor, CD
ROM, etc., and the machine worked well for days. Then,
when I went to install the modem drivers, I restarted and
guess what? "windows protection error. You need to
restart your computer". I tried to run the patch; "this
patch is not designed for your version of windows"
(incidentally, this is the same error message I got when
I tried to run the patch on the 95 system), I extracted
the two files as before and placed them in the IOSUBSYS
folder, to no avail. Any suggestions?
Thanx,
RIP

First, extract fresh copies of "c:\windows\system\iosubsys\scsiport.pdr"
and "c:\windows\system\iosubsys\esdi_506.pdr" from your Windows
98 CD. Windows 98 has its own versions of these files. Next, try to
undo the modem installation. If the computer won't start in Safe mode,
start it in DOS, type "scanreg /restore", press "Enter" and restore the
previous registry.
