I have used Windows 95 on a 166MMX Pentium PC for several
years.
When I now try and start up i get the "Windows was not
shut down properly" message.
In the past when this happened I just press the buttons
when prompted and the Scandisk utility runs and
eventually I get back to the Windows 95 desktop.
But this time when I go through the same process, the
script appears to run as before, then the Windows 95
desktop appears for a second or two then the screen is
almost black and I just see some vertical purple lines.
How can i get my PC running again ? I dont know how to
reinstall my original Windows 95 CD.
Or from this description do I have a more serious
problem ?
Many thanks. appreciate any help as I have a lot of data
on my C drive I need !!

Get some comprehensive hardware diagnostics and give them a good run - it's
possible that whatever problem caused the original illegal shutdown is also
causing the problem on restart.
Try booting to safe mode - tap away at F8 before Windows starts, and select
safe mode from the menu. If you can get to safe mode you could remove the
video display adapter driver and install a fresh copy (not the one already
on the disk).
