While attempting to reinstall W95 on a computer, I learned
that several files were missing. I used a 95 startup disk
but soon received and error message listing missing files.
How can I locate and replace these files?

That depends entirely on what files are missing.  What are the exact
messages that are telling you that files are missing, and when exactly do
the messages appear?

You could re-do the installation and see whether or not the same problem
occurs again.

The legacy Windows registry is located in
C:\WINDOWS\USER.DAT and C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM.DAT.
The files can't just be recopied, they are built over time
by the system and the Setup program.  You can use SCANREG
from MS-DOS to retrieve an ealier backup from the archives
(on later versions of Windows 95).
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM.INI is a Win16 legacy INI
(configuration) file but is required to start Windows 95.
** You may need to reinstall Windows 95. **
