Hi folks,
I'm in a pickle right now. Please can someone advise me?
I attempted to try out the Knoppix Linux boot CD on my Win95 'puter.
The Toshiba XM-5602B CDROM, with driver dated: 24/08/96 could/would not
read the CDR disk that this prog was on. Maybe an updated driver would fix
this, I thought.
I did a Google search for an updated CDROM driver and eventually found
myself at DriverGuide.com, downloading 2 files:
D011V109.SYS & Rundll32.exe
The D011V109.SYS went into C:\Windows sytem and the following line was
added to the Config.sys file:
device=C: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM\d011v109.sys /D toscd001 /m 15 /l e
Now, the1st boot up screen shows:
Found CDROM : Toshiba CDROM XM-5602B
While the 2nd boot up screen, just after the line "Starting Windows 95..."
Reads:
Oak Technology Inc. OTI-011 CD Rom device driver, Rev D011V109
(Some other stuff)
Device name: TOSCD001
Number of drives: 1
After rebooting the PC The AIDA32 System Information utlility still shows:
Current Driver date: 24/08/96
So no change there. Is this new driver functioning correctly or is there
something I need to do to configure it properly?
I'll leave the story of the strange events following the installation of
the Rundll32.exe file for another time.
TIA

Toshiba CD drives often have a problem with *nix OS's. There is a jumper
setting you are supposed to change on Toshiba drives, but I've found that
it's easier to just get a modern ATAPI cd drive from the local office supply
store. Should''t cost you more than $25 for a decent 50x model.

Thanks Gerry,
that's by far the most sensible idea suggested so far. :-)

Oh, and I guess I should mention... don't bother with using the real mode
drivers (including the ones you downloaded for the Toshiba). In Windows,
the real mode drivers will just slow you down compared to the protected mode
drivers native to Windows. And they won't help you at all when auto-booting
from the Knoppix disk, assuming your PC and CD drive has CD-booting
capability (this is a big assumption on my part -- the old Toshiba drive
definately won't have it, and many older P-1 class computers won't either).
