USB help needed - 08 Dec 2003 11:07 GMT
Would like to add USB port to my aging but still very
functional notebook that runs on 95, it's a single purpose
machine.

Any suggestions, I looked on the 95 download page and
nothing. Have a digital camera would like to upload photos
on the notebook if possible...

Thanks for any help or suggestions...

The earliest versions of Win95 cannot accommodate USB. Later versions
can do so but their USB worked erratically. Not until Win98 did
Windows handle USB well.

To see the version of Windows 95, right-click on My Computer and
choose Properties. (For more details, see document 158238 in the
Microsoft KnowledgeBase.)

Service Pack 1 changed the Windows 95 version from 950 to 950A.
You can download SP1 from www.microsoft.com.

There has been no Service Pack 2. However, many updates and add-ons
are available for Win95 and are likely to help many Win95 users.  Go
to

Also, Ben Jos Walbeehm maintains a Windows 95 System Updates page at:

In August 1996, Microsoft distributed Service Release 2 (not Service
Pack 2) to manufacturers, and this changed the version to 950B. OEM
Service Release 2 (OSR2) is so designated because it was sent to
Original Equipment Manufacturers.  It is not a service release to the
general public. Document 169625 in the Microsoft KnowledgeBase spells
out the conditions under which one can legally acquire 950B.

OSR2.1 is OSR2 plus support for the Universal Serial Bus.

OSR2.5 is version 950C of Windows 95, which has an integrated
Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.01 Setup, and updated online services
clients. OSR2.5 allows PC manufacturers to install an integrated
Windows 95 that contains the latest available updates.

However some components of version 950B are available to all users of
Windows 95. Also, there is an unauthorized pool of info about OSR2 at
   http://www.compuclinic.com/osr2faq/

A few updates exist for OSR2.  Go to

First off, does you machine have a USB port?

If so you should try to upgrade the machine to win98se...

Even the versions of win95 with USB support have very poor (if any)
support at all.

I'm in the same boat. If you have Win 95 version OEM
Service Release 2.1 Version 4.03.1212-1214 (4.00.950B)
8/24/96-8/27/97, it supports USB.

If not, MS suggests you upgrade o Win 98 second edition.
Easier said than done.  I'm looking for this upgrade CD.
