It is not a system problem that I have. I don't
(necessarily) need to restore the old system. I just need
to look at some files that w95undo.dat contains. What's
the best way of doing that?
Are you aware that the undo file is not a disk backup - it simply contains
the operating system files that got replaced during the upgrade. That's why
I can't think of any text files that could be in it that might be of
interest to you.
If this was my problem, I would image the hard disk, run the undo, look at
the file I wanted, and restore the disk.

Thanks for all your replies. Yes, I've tried to do that,
but like I said, I don't have the w95undo.ini file and
can't uninstall without it. I have also tried to run
extract and iextract, but both need the .ini file.
My guess is that w95undo.ini is only needed if one truly
wants to uninstall the old op.system, so the uninstall
program knows where to put each system file. In my case,
I don't need to do that. Is there any other software out
there that can read/decompress the w95undo.dat?

If your description of the function of the INI file is correct - and I don't
know whether it is or not - then any w95undo.INI file would serve your
purpose.

I was away for a couple of weeks.
Yes, that's my guess too. The iextract program looks for
w95undo.ini, and if it does not find it, it stops. So
that's one of the things I asked for in my original email:
does anyone have a file like that I could use? A VERY
clumsy alternative would be to install windows 3.1 and
then reinstall windows 95 by creating the .ini file. I'm
really trying to avoid doing that.
Thanks,
Brian

Not only would that procedure provide you with the file you need, it is the
best way to ensure that the file is as similar as possible to the original.
If this was my problem I wouldn't hesitate to simply create the INI file as
you have described - the Win3.1 installation takes just a few minutes and
the upgrade is only slightly longer.

Thanks again for your reply. Now the obvious question is
where to get Win3.1 from? I can try searching the web for
it, but if you have a link for it handy, please forward it
to me. I will also need win95 for the subsequent upgrade.
