>COMPUTER WITH WINDOWS 95 WITH INTERNET EXPLORER WILL NOT
>START EVEN IN SAFE MODE
1. Please do not post messages using all-capitals. They are harder
to read and they are also considered to be SHOUTING. Many people will
simply ignore these posts, so your chances of getting a solution to
the problem are reduced.
2. Your error has two possible causes:
A: The himem.sys file has been deleted or damaged in some way.
B: There is a defective or improperly installed RAM module in the
computer.
Turn on the computer and watch the screen carefully during the startup
process. When the Windows 95 startup logo appears press the Esc key
to clear it.
If you see the following sequence of messages:
"Himem.sys is testing extended memory"
"Himem.sys has detected unreliable XMS memory......."
"Himem.sys is missing or corrupt......"
then that would be pretty conclusive evidence that a RAM module
problem is the root cause of the errors.
On the other hand if you do not get any message about unreliable XMS
memory then that indicates the problem may be with the himem.sys file
itself.
Try starting the computer again and this time press the F8 key as soon
as the "Starting Windows 95...." message appears. That will bring up
the Windows Startup Menu with a number of choices. Select the one for
"Command Prompt Only".
Again, watch for the message about unreliable XMS memory.
When the computer has stopped at the C:\> prompt enter the following
command:
DIR HIMEM.SYS /S /P
It should report finding one copy in the c:\windows folder and another
in the c:\windows\command\ebd folder.
Post the results back here and we will proceed to the next step.
Include in your response the details about the location(s) of the
himem.sys file as reported by the DIR command.
Good luck
