I have a older Toshiba laptop that refuses to boot up.
When I turn it on, it does a little clicking but nothing
else.  The screen is completely dark.  I've tried turning
it on with F10 and/or F8 keys pushed down; I tried
starting it up with the set up disk in the floppy drive
but nothing, just a dark screen.  My OS is Windows 95.

Old trick I use with toshibas... take the battery out of the unit.
Disconnect the unit from its external power supply.  Leave them without
power for about an hour.  Then reassemble the thing and try to turn it back
on.

If that doesn't work, do it aqgain, but this time don't put the battery back
it (I know, its kinda dangerous since often the batteries are used as
regulators).

Sometimes, the power save stuff doesn't work right.  Once you do get the
unit back up and running, get into BIOS and disable APM, ACPI, and the
wake-on stuff.  YOu might also consider flashing the BIOS to a more recent
version.

After hours spent tinkering with the machine, reading the
manual, messing around on the Toshiba and Microsoft
websites, I was ready to chuck the old machine.  Now it's
working fine and hopefully can give us a few more years
service.
