I bought a brand new Win 95 CD (still plastic wrapped)
from a yard sale. I have Win 3.11 machine but when I try
to install it, it says I have a previous version of the
OS and need to "upgrade". Any solutions for this? My
eventual goal is to move to Win 98 but because of the
file format differences I want to copy my files to a CD
first. I can do so only in Win 95 not in Win 3.1x.

you can rename   win.com  in the windows folder
then use the win95 cd

if you install in the default of  C:\windows.000
you will effectively have a clean install of win95
but with all original data there...

or if you specify c:\windows   you will effectively
have upgraded your win3.1
