If that result you reported was from the command

DIR C:\HIMEM.SYS /S /P

then you have a potentially serious problem in that at least one
critical system file (himem.sys) has been deleted from your hard
drive.

Before we proceed any further we need to determine just how serious
the problem may be, and how best to correct it.

Try the following two commands in the same way as you previously did:

DIR C:\WIN.COM /S /P
DIR C:\KERNEL32.DLL /S /P
DIR C:\VMM32.VXD /S /P

If any of these results in a "file not found" result as well then your
problems can almost certainly only be fixed by reinstalling Windows.

However if these 3 files do exist on your hard drive then we attempt
to fix the himem.sys situation.

Enter the following command to check for the existence of the Windows
95 install files on your hard drive:

DIR C:\WIN95*.CAB /S /P

That may find a large number of files, most likely in the folder
c:\windows\options\cabs but possibly somewhere else.

If those files are not on your hard drive then you will need to have:
1.  Your Windows 95 install CD.
2.  A boot disk that includes the drivers for accessing your CDROM
drive.  Get one from www.bootdisk.com if you do not have one.

Post the results back here and we will proceed to the next step.

Good luck

I have already tried to reinstall windows 95 over but for
some reason it keeps telling me that the disk product #'s
are invalid.

I also took the computer to BestBuy and they swap ram to
verify that the chips was ok. But they really were not
interested or capable of helping with a Win 95 system.
They were courteous because I just bought a new system
for the family there. Unfortunately this is my office
machine.

Try extracting a new copy of himem.sys from the windows .cab files.

Boot to a DOS prompt again and enter the following commands:

cd\windows\options\cabs
extract /y /a /l c:\windows win95_02.cab himem.sys

That should put a new copy of himem.sys into your windows folder and
the computer should hopefully now boot into Windows okay.

Good luck

Ron thanks for the code, I tried it as is and with the
Win95 CD, and sometimes with my win startup disc in. I
also have a newer version of Windows95 on my harddisk
(C:win95 ) But I do not know if it was a full install. I
scanned my printscreens in PDF for you to view. I know I
made mistakes, but I tried a lot of possibilities.
However I am not knowlegable in
DOS and I am afraid I'll make things worse, plus I get
frustrated.
I greatly appreciate the time you have taken to try to
help me out and feel confident we can resolve this.
I will send the PDF to your sign in email address.
I look foward to your help.
Jack
