I wonder if anyone can help with a small problem that is
driving me mad!
I am building a second PC (just for and old accounting
software and word processing) with components left over
after several upgrades. All these worked ok when last
used but not necessarily with each other.
This is based on an Elite K7S5A Motherboard, Duron 800MHz
and 128MB PC100 Ram. It has a CD WR and a 4GB HDD with
the usual Floppy. I have also tried 256MB PC133 Ram with
the same problems. I have used Fdsik and formatted OK and
scandisk tells me there are no errors on drives C or D.
I am having extreme difficulties loading an operating
system (have tried 95,98 or XP). During loading setup
could not find some files on the Windows95 CD
(msjtick.drv - vjoyd.vxd - msmpu 401.drv and msmpu
401.vxd )
I have managed to load 95 after a number of attempts but
now I can only boot into Safe Mode for a few seconds then
I keep getting a Blue screen with various error messages
including "A fatal error has occurred :xxxxxxxin VXD VMM
(01) +00003AF. The current application will be terminated"
Can anyone help please please please??

Great Magazine. One small request. Would it not be
possible to produce a small list for all readers which
contains info on say about 10/15 different components
(Motherboards, PCUs, Graphics cards, sound cards, etc)
which will work with each other so that when embarking on
a self-build problems such as mine would be eliminated??
I know that there are 100's of components out there but a
few for both Intel and Amd could be used to help all
budgets.

My interpretation --
You have at least two problems, one of which is defective hardware and
another is related to Windows' installation. If you could get into
Safe Mode and stay there consistently, this might be something you
could fix by finding more appropriate device drivers. However, you say
that Safe Mode is unstable. Furthermore you say you get different
error messages on different occasions. Such behavior can only come
from hardware, as software would do the same things each time. You
need to get reliable hardware before you can do anything with
software.
