I'm trying to set up an old computer for a friend. She's reinstalling Windows 95, but it's asking for a "certificate of authenticity" number. She does not have this certificate (lost). There's a number to call (1-800-RU-LEGIT) but she can't get through. A post below by pvp on April 1 seems to be asking the same question, but I tried Bill Starbuck's suggestion and it didn't work. Is there any way to reinstall 95 without the certificate number? Thanks very much for any help on this.

Hi,
It's not possible to reinstall the OS without COA.

Call 1-800-MICROSOFT. They can give you a replacement number.

Thanks very much for the replies, R.S. and Bill. I'll try calling the Microsoft number myself- perhaps my friend got lost in the voicemail system when she previously called. I appreciate the help.

I hope that number works. It is the number that Microsoft person who
is in charge of this activity gave to the MVPs last week.

Hi Bill
I appreciate your reply and help. Actually, I found a similar question over on the Windows 95 General forum. Someone posted authentication numbers, and one of them worked. I'm still going to try to reach Microsoft... when I have time to wait on hold- LO
Thanks again

Authenticity??? Ive got exactly the same problem :(

Hey Danny
After spending quite a bit of time calling various Microsoft numbers and playing the "voicemail/hold for 10 minutes" game, I got a number from a poster on the General Forum and it worked. I can't seem to post the link, but check the post entitled "Windows 95 OEM Registration Number" on April 8, 2004. The first number on sc57's post worked for me. Good luck.
