Hi,

You can improve the system performance with the given steps:

Deleting temporary files and directories

Deleting temporary files will increase hard disk space and reduce the time
Windows takes to access the hard drive. It can also fix problems associated
with spooling print jobs. Windows uses the C:\WINDOWS\TEMP directory to
store files temporarily. Sometimes these files accumulate and need to be
deleted. To delete these files, follow the steps below for your Windows
version:

The steps listed below will delete temporary files (*.tmp) and
subdirectories in C:\WINDOWS\TEMP.

1. Click Start, and then Shut Down
2. Select Restart in MS-DOS (R) mode, and then click OK.
When the DOS prompt appears it should read C:\WINDOWS.
3. Type DELTREE TEMP and press ENTER. Select Y, and press ENTER to confirm.
This will delete the TEMP directory, all temporary files, and subdirectories
under C:\WINDOWS\TEMP.
4. At the C:\WINDOWS prompt, type the following: MD TEMP
This will create a new TEMP directory.
5. Type EXIT to restart Windows.
6. When Windows appears click Start, Find, and then Files or Folders.
7. In the Named box, type *.TMP and then click Find Now.
A list of matching files will appear.
8. Click Select All from the Edit menu.
9. Press DELETE and click Yes to confirm.
You may not be able to delete a file that is currently in use.
10. Exit the Find window.
11. Restart Windows.

Running Scandisk in Windows 95.

1. Close all programs that are running. This includes background programs
such as virus scanners.
2. Click Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, and then ScanDisk.
3. Select the drive (usually C:\) and check Automatically Fix Errors.
4. If low on time, select Standard; otherwise, select Thorough.
A thorough scan could take more than an hour to complete.
5. Click Start and follow the onscreen instructions.
If Scandisk continually restarts, a background program is still accessing
the hard drive; restart the computer in Safe mode and try again.
6. After testing, the results will appear. If Scandisk finds any errors, you
will be prompted to fix or repair the file(s). Click Close to exit program
when finished.

Disk Defragmenter for all versions of windows

1. Close all programs that are running. This includes background programs
such as scanners.
2. Click Start, Programs (or All Programs), Accessories, and then System
Tools.
3. Click Disk Defragmenter.
Follow the onscreen instructions. If Disk Defragmenter continually restarts,
a background program is still accessing the hard drive; restart the computer
in Safe mode and try again.

Memory leakage and restarting Windows

If the computer is left turned on most of the time, it is a good idea to
restart the computer on a regular basis. Many versions of Windows have a
problem with memory leakage.

Memory leaks are occurring if the computer runs well when it is first
started or restarted, but performs noticeably slower after several programs
have been opened and closed.

This issue is seen most frequently in Windows 95. Refer to Microsoft(R)
support document Q148336, for additional information and a link to a patch
for Kernal32.

Memory leaks can also occur if a program is closed before it has fully
opened. Always allow a program to open completely before closing it.

To fix memory leaks immediately, restart the computer.

For a permanent fix, isolate the program causing the leak by using the steps
below:

1. Start with a fresh Windows session by restarting the computer.
2. Right-click the My Computer icon on the desktop and then click Properties
3. Click the Performance tab. Note the percentage next to System Resources.
4. Open a program that might be causing the computer to run more slowly.
5. View the percentage of system resources (or amount of physical memory)
again and write it down.
6. Close and open the program repeatedly, waiting about 10 seconds each
time.
7. View the information in Step 5 periodically and compare the number to the
one recorded.
If the system resources continue to decrease, then a memory leak is
occurring. Contact the program manufacturer for available solutions.
8. If the System Resource percentage or available memory returns to the same
numbers each time, then the program is not creating a memory leak.

With that solved, let's continue to next.

Regarding Windows 98 upgrade, Whenever, you install a new operating system,
you have to install the compatible drivers for the devices installed in your
system
Therefore, after installing Windows 98 in your system, you need to install
Windows 98 compatible drivers for the preinstalled devices like Audio,
Video, modem, etc.
