You don't have to get Windows running to avoid losing what's on the hard
drive. If you can boot to a startup floppy and if the hard drive is
accessible you can use DOS commands to copy important files.
What happens when you try to start Windows. At what point in the process
does it fail and what (exactly) is the error message?
When you boot to floppy, try DIR C: <enter> and report the result.
