Windows was installed and used for years. The computer
was disconnected for about 4 months and this is what
occurred upon re-connection. I still have the original
Windows 95 installation disk, and can not install 98 due
to space issues. This computer is used by my father for
email/internet purposes primarily.
what can I type at c: to reinstall? Nothing is happening
upon disk insertion.
Thanks!
Firstly, you need to think about what might be wrong. Your description
says nothing happened, which implies that nothing should be wrong. But
something damaged the Windows installation. In particular, the
harddisk may be failing. I recommend that you run ScanDisk in
"thorough" mode as soon as you can do so.
Secondly, VMM is not the same on every computer. It is assembled
during the Setup process, so the only way to recover it is to
reinstall Windows. You need to run Windows' setup program.
Windows 95 does not provide for access to a CD-ROm from DOS. You must
add CD-ROM support to drive C: or to a Windows Startup Disk. Here is
how to add your CD-ROM driver to the boot disk. The boot disk might be
drive C: or it might be a Windows Startup Disk that you can insert
into drive A:.
The CD-ROM driver will normally have a name with the letters CD in it
and it will have the extension .SYS. One way to get a CD-ROM driver is
to run the installation program that came with the CD-ROM. Also, you
can usually get a driver from the web site of the companmy that made
the CD-ROM. Or you can search your C: drive for *CD*.SYS.
Using Notepad or any word processor, make a text file, name it
CONFIG.SYS and add it to the boot disk. This file should look like
this, but with the name of your CD-ROM driver in place of
CDDRIVER.SYS:
DEVICE=CDDRIVER.SYS /D:MSCD000
DEVICE=HIMEM.SYS
Add a copy of MSCDEX.EXE to the boot disk. You can get MSCDEX from the
folder C:\Windows/Command.
Using Notepad or any word processor, make a text file, name it
AUTOEXEC.BAT and add it to the bootdisk. It should look like this:
MSCDEX.EXE /D:MSCD000
Once you have access to the CD-ROM from DOS. you should be able to run
the program setup.exe that is on the Windows CD-ROM.
