Working on someone's ancient pcchips "computer from hell". I have
googled myself into every single tweak possible to remove
compatibility mode to no avail. (win95b)

Computer has numerous problems too long to detail here. My only
question: this protected mode driver is not even mentioned in the
bootlog.txt file, so no failure, no nothing... this may turn out to be
a bios setting which I am unable to change because i have "battery
failed" etc at bootup and running system defaults by default. Even
with a new battery. But that's another problem. Immediate question is
how can I get esdi_506.pdr to load, or to be even mentioned in the
bootlog?

thanks, eric

Eric,

I have had the same problem some time ago
It ended up by controlling the flatcables to your discs and cd rom drive
One had a bad contact at the flatcable connection, resulting bios couldnt identify the drive
Also you should be able to get your bios working

Jake,
both are on ide channel 1, cd-rom drive is identified perfectly at the
bootscreen, have swapped out various cd-rom drives and all are
identified.
Have also swapped out the ide cable
Basic problem is esdi_506.pdr is not even mentioned in the bootlog
text. Wondering how to invoke it, or the causes of its invocation.

Bios cannot be altered at all. New battery has no effect on a "battery
failed, loading bios defaults situation".
