Hello,  I am trying to fix a friends computer for her.
Besides some of the other problems, including the CD-ROM
driver and sound card driver needing to be reinstalled I
discovered something else that I am not sure how to handle.
In the device manager it shows the ! (explanation point
inside yellow circle) next to the Primary IDE Controller
(single fifo) and also next to the Secondary IDE Controller
(single fifo) and states there is a hardware conflict.  I
have had the machine open trying to install a different
CD-ROM to see if it would help.  Does the message showing a
hardware conflict indicate that I may have gotten the
cables crossed up while changing CD-ROMS or is it usually a
software issue"?  Any help or advise would be greatly
appreciated.

try removing all non-essential devices
such as sound card and modem

in other words...pull all the cards but the video

then, if you have no problems

one at a time...start adding components

sometimes just using a different slot can solve the problem

also...if you are using any ISA devices...they probably have jumpers
which may have to be changed to assign different IRQ's

if you still have problems

post back with more details

Start regedit on the problem computer, expand and highlight the
following key and look in the right window for "NOIDE".  If you
find it, delete it and restart the computer.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CURRENT CONTROLSET\SERVICE\VXD\IOS
