hi please help
i have recently formatted the c drive on an old pc(i still
have another pc for downloading).i cant get my cdrom drive
to work as the bootdisk wont install the generic banana
driver.ive tryed everything,cdindos,bootdisk with other
drivers, cdrom god etc but nothing works.the only thing
that nearly works is the panasonic cdrom driver installer
which finds the cdrom, installs the driver ok then says to
reboot but this only goes back to the bootdisk and nothing
else happens.ive heard to put the correct  driver in
config.sys file.if this is correct then where is the file
and how do put the driver into it and whats the driver
file called.my cdrom is a panasonic cr562,as i said i have
downloaded the correct drivers for it

The Panasonic utility probably assumes that the hard drive
is bootable.  If this isn't the case, start the computer with
a boot floppy, type "sys  c:" and press "Enter".  Then remove
the floppy and restart.  Also, please note that some older
computers have the CD drive hooked up through a sound
card.  If this is the case, you will have to load drivers for it
as well.

Hi Ben,
I have been reading some of your responses to some of these
post and I think you can help me out with a problem I am
having that I haven't seen addressed.  In this message you
stated that the sound card drivers may need to be loaded.
How and where could I find the appopriate sound card
drivers if I do not know the name and/or make of the card
installed?

A friend of mine is having problems with her computer that
sounds similar to the problem addressed in this string.
After a unexpected power outage, her CD-ROM can not be
found by the computer.  I have checked for loose
connections and noticed that there was an additional plug
in that is not plugged in on my computer on the back of the
CD-ROM (I am assuming this is the sound card that you
referred to?).  I do not know what kind of sound card,
CD-ROM or any other hardware is installed as it is not my
computer.

I am going to try bootdisk.com to try to load the CD-ROM
drivers and hope that it works but it sound like I am also
going to need the sound card driver to complete the
installation to locate the CD-ROM?

Thanks a bunch.
Paula

In the sound card configuration, the flat ribbon cable on the CD
drive runs to the sound card, then another ribbon cable runs from
the sound card to the motherboard.  If the ribbon cable goes directly
from the CD drive to the motherboard, a boot floppy from
http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm should load DOS drivers for it.
If you are trying to get the CD drive working in Windows, there may
be other problems.

The install procedure needs to be run with the boot disk inserted in the
drive. How you do this depends on the install procedure - for instance, you
may be able to copy the Panasonic installation folder to the boot disk, then
boot to it and install the driver off that disk.  But note that the boot
files used for the generic boot disk are quite complex, and it might not be
possible to automatically install the drivers using the supplied install
procedure.

You should be able to look at the CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT on the
Panasonic floppy to see how these files were modified for the CD-ROM driver
installation, then duplicate the entries (and the associated files, eg the
SYS file) by manually editing the corresponding files on the boot disk.
