I ws attempting to install Win 95 on my Compaq Armada
1120. I got a VFAT message.  Now I can't get the computer
to do anything.  Does anyone know what I can do short of
taking it to a tech shop.  Thanks.  Ron

You could provide the entire error message (and when it appears).
You could go to http://support.microsoft.com and search the knowledgebase.

But this may help:

What similar problem?  You've posted 3 times but we have no clue what
you are talking about.  Even with our special glasses we can't see the
thread you are referring to.  You are reading the original message off a
group archive but the message has expired or has been cleared from the
Microsoft server.  Start a new thread and explain clearly and in details
what problem your are having.  If you get an error message copy it in
FULL and VERBATIM in your post so that the MVPs or others can diagnose
the problem properly.

John

I was attempting to install Win 95 on my Compaq Armada
1120. Now, when I turn on the laptop, I got a VFAT message, something like
"VFAT device initialization failed... system halted".  Now I can't get the
computer
to do anything.

Make sure the laptop has a valid "c:\msdos.sys" file, something like this:

[Paths]
WinDir=C:\WINDOWS
WinBootDir=C:\WINDOWS
HostWinBootDrv=C
[Options]
BootGUI=1
;end

Solution is simple: Check if IFSHLP.SYS exists in Windows directory.
If it does, delete config.sys from root directory.
If it does not exist, you need to get it from someone else.
