W95/DOS dual boot problems

Hi all

I've got a Win95 and DOS dual boot on the same notebook.

Booting into W95 works fine

Booting into Previous version of MSDOS works OK

BUT then when I try and Boot back into Win95 the system just locks after the
initial system beep before boot

The only way to recover is to boot from a floppy and copy the IO.SYS and
MSDOS.SYS Win95 version back onto the drive.

I've tried various combinations using batch files to copy the IO.SYS etc but
cannont get anything to work. Mainly because it needs to happen just as it
boots. Copying them with a batch file means that the IO.DOS and MSDOS.DOS
end up as the windows versions after windows has booted.

I googled and found a link to say that this type of thing would not work
with W95OSR2 unless a fix was used .... unfortuneatley the link to the fix
was broken

As far as I know I am not using OSR2

Why still Win95 ? We have a large number of machines that perform some
simple tasks and don't need anything greater. I just need some of them to be
able to dual boot.

Thanks in advance for any help

Why do you need to dual boot?  If you boot your Windows 95 to
"Commmand Prompt Only" you have full DOS functionality using the DOS 7
that comes as part of Windows 95.

If you really do need the dual boot then the only practicable method I
know of for doing this is to partition the hard drive so that DOS and
Windows are on separate partitions and then use a third party boot
manager such as BootItNG (www.bootitng.com) to select the desired
operating system at boot time.

Good luck

Thanks very much for the reply !

I'll have a look out for some boot managers. I assume Win98 must have one
built in cos these systems have always worked fine.

The reason I need 'native' DOS 6.22 is we have some specialised devices whos
software refuses to run under W9x even in command prompt mode

Thanks again

Andrew

If you mean that the devices refuse to run under DOS 7, then you may need a
dual boot option. But selecting Command Prompt Only from the startup menu is
exactly the same as a boot to DOS. If you need to load specialized drivers
or configure memory in a particular way, dual booting may be required, but
there could be simpler options, such as the DOS SetVer command.

Windows 98 does not have a boot manager - it uses the same process as W95.

Odd because W98 on the same model of machine works fine swapping to/from
previous version of DOS on boot menu

That's why the best solution might be to try and fix the reboot problem.  Do
you have the www site that mentioned the fix? That may have a clue as to
what this fix is and where it's moved to.

Ahh done a biit of hunting ...

goto www.mdgx.com/msdos.htm
scroll to nearly the bottom of the page just pas the 'black box'
you'll see a link "DUAL-BOOT IN OSR2/WIN98"
I've not tried downloading this at all yet

That sounds possible. If the halt during boot is caused by a memory usage
problem with HIMEM then by replacing IO.SYS you are fixing the memory. Since
you already know how to re-install a working IO.SYS, then you aren't running
a risk in trying the fix. I guess it's possible that you picked up the wrong
version of these programs somewhere along the way, even though you aren't
running OSR2.

Wrong version of the programs ?

I assume your referring to the fixes ? I've not tried any yet so far just
used the orig Win95 CD and Dos 6.22 floppies

Will try this 'fix' and or some boot managers soon and let you know

By 'wrong version' I meant that you have somehow picked up the OSR2 versions
that create this problem. AFAIK they would operate just fine with your
version of Windows, except for creating this problem.

I recommend this post-install fix for Win95SR2:

C:
CD \
Attrib  -r -s -h C:\*.DOS
Ren  C:\*.DOS  *.SOD

If you fall into this trap (i.e. running "Previous version of MS-DOS"
from the F8 boot menu in Win95 SR2.x - then the fix is:

Get a correct version (SR2) boot diskette
Make sure the SYS.COM is on it, i.e.
  Copy  C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\SYS.COM  A:
Boot off that Win95 SR2 boot diskette, enter this command:
  SYS  C:

That fixes Partition Boot Record -> IO.SYS -> Command.com so that this
code sequence of the real-mode boot process is restored.  The settings
files that these interpret (i.e. C:\WINBOOT.INI, C:\MSDOS.SYS,
C:\CONFIG.SYS and C:\AUTOEXEC.BAT) are then the only dragons left to
conquer, and at least these can by bypassed via Shift-F8 at boot.

I don't have a problem that Win95 SR2.x broke the "Previous version of
MS-DOS" facility, which in any case is doomed if C: is FAT32.  I do
have a problem that by design, it still offers the broken facility.
