My labtop has Windows 95 on it and recently an error
appeared.  The error said," EMM386 has detected error #u5
in an application at memory address F000:4401.  To
minimize the chance of data loss, EMM386 has halted your
computer.  For more information, consult your
documentation.  To restart your computer, press ENTER".  I
pressed Enter several times and nothing is happening.  I
would like to know if you could help me with this.  If you
could give me an answer I would be very thankful.  Another
question is that I would like to know would upgrading to
Windows XP solve the problem?

XP would take care of the problem (if the issue isn't hardware), but only if
your hardware is up to snuff.

Before attempting that, try this:  edit config.sys and autoexec.bat and
remark out everything line (don't delete, because you might want to put some
of it back later).  Many times, the system is configured to use himem.sys
and emm386.exe from config.sys, but they really don't need to be there.

Failing that, look around on the web for a good memory tester disk.  I use
TuffTest, myself, but there are several good ones out there.
