My daughter has returned from college (six years later)
with a new lap top and her original college pc running
Windows95.  She had lots of personnel files on the PC and
wanted to copy some and then erase the others before we
donate it.  When I tried to boot it up after unboxing it,
it has a problem reading and asked for a startup disk.  I
found a 95 start up disk, I think I made when she left
home originally.  It does not bring it to the operating
system, but will give me a a: prompt.  It says there is
no hard drive.  Can anyone help me get the harddrive back
so I can at least earse the personal information, if not
recapture the files she wanted?

try to re-detect the harddrive in the bios
(the cmos battery may be dead)

when the machine is booting up you should see some message such as

hit <del> to enter setup

worst.  Doesn't have a master setup, and I'm not savy
enought to figure out how to get there.  Tried to enter
the low level format menu and it just pops me right back
out.

ok
stay away from the low level format option
but one of the options (sometimes called  "advanced") will have the
harddrive setup...usually of you set everything to auto...it will work
