I'm a novice and have no idea what to do next. I will be
extremely grateful for any suggestions. Thank you and

Defrag is seldom necessery, as Windows will refreagment the drive almost
immediately. Deleting programs, DLLs, INI files and related, aside from the
corresponding uninstall procedure, is courting disaster. Tell your wife that
backing up files, pictures, videos, music and e-mails to CD-R or R/W should
leave enough free space.

Operating Systems such as Windows do many things behind their users backs
about which only their original programmers know.

Absolutely incorrect.  You've got to be kidding!
Where did you come up with that bit of misinformation?

1.  Your display driver needs to be reinstalled...apparently you are set to a generic VGA driver at the moment.  What display adapter is in the computer, do you know?  Have you tried changing the driver to see if windows has the correct driver for it?
What version of Windows 95 do you have?

Right-click the Desktop, click Properties, then the Settings tab> Advanced Properties button> Adapter tab, and see what is listed there.  Click the Change button, choose Show Compatible devices, and see if there is a driver listed there for you to use.
