My brother has a problem with his PC.  Every time he
boots it up he gets as far as the windows login screen
(Windows 98), he enters his password and then gets the
following error message:

Explorer has caused an Invalid Page Fault in module
explorer.exe (0177:0040F31).

I have looked through the knowledge base and tried all
the suggestion I can find but to no avail.  Can anyone
suggest the best cause of action.

He is contemplating re-installing windows again from
scratch but does not want to lose his e-mails if he can
help it.  Is there a way of backing up and recovering e-
mail through DOS?  Am I correct in thinking the e-mail
data is located in the c:\windows\application
data\microsoft\outlook express (.dbx files).  He is using
Outlook Express version 5.

Any help would be appreciated.

InsideOE: Complete Clone Backup:
http://insideoe.tomsterdam.com/backup/clone.htm

Where you have to export registry keys, from DOS, use this form in the command:
Regedit /e output-file keyname

So, for example, to export the "Identities" key from DOS to a file named "Ident.reg"on a floppy (A: drive), use this:
Regedit /e a:\Ident.reg "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Identities"

The quote marks are only required if the key name has spaces in it, but to be safe use the quotes regardless.

You can make a batch file to run all the key exports at once.

Before you wipe it all out, you might try troubleshooting the Explorer error, though.
