Open With... is either for undefined file types or for more advanced Widows
versions, such as ME or XP (beyond the scope of these newsgroups). Decide
upon a typical file type and def?ne an appropriate program by the folloging
procedure:
Next time a "Open With..." happens, be more specific, by clicking on Browse
and choosing a more straightforward application with which to always use the
file type. If the default choice does not satisfy you or you need an extra
application as an alternative, do the following:
In a My Computer window or lower in hierarchy, use menu "View/Options/File
Types...", look for a type known only by its extension, "XYZ file", click on
Edit, in the nezt dialog, click on New, and on a box which appears on top,
fill Action with the word Open or something like that, click Browse,
navigate My Computer, then C:
and Windows, Program Files or wherever that application was installed;
finally confirm with OK on every dialog box, so open every window is closed.
Thus you have set a "default" Open for those files.

It helps if you understand how that list is populated.
File associations have developed as a series of layers as Windows grew
from Win3.yuk to 9x and beyond.
Originally, there was only one file association, which would "open"
the file when the file was launched. The simple "Open With..." as
used in Win95xx and Win98xx works in this way, as does Win3.yuk
This was later fleshed out a tad, by adding other "canonical" generic
actions such as Print. These can be selected from the rt-click
context menu in Windows Explorer. Both this, and the next (more
significant) change, first appeared in Win95 AFAIK (dunno NT 3.xx)
This system was fleshed out further, generalizing it to non-canonical
actions that would be listed in the rt-click menu. These could have
any name, and you could add as many as you like.
Any one of these actions (canonical or not) could be set as the
Default action, but here's the rub; some contexts ignore this setting
and will use the action called "open" instead. Specifics:
- these use the action selected as default:
- double-click or Enter in Windows Explorer
- these will use the action called "open":
- use of file name from command line
- use of Start command
- launching files from File Manager
- launching files by DDE?
- populating the traditional "open with" list
So the list of apps you see offered by the traditional Open With are
those that featues as "open" action command lines for some "file type"
or other. That's why you can't edit this list; it's built up "on the
fly" from a side-effect of other settings you may not want to break.

That's a good Q; no PC I've seen does that, so it seems as if there's
an extraneous " somewhere in your PC's registry or something :-(

Thank you for explanations, I did remove all file-types associated with
IE, as I did remove IE with IEradicator and don't need those file-types
there anymore.

Did fix it! It was in
-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT
-*
-shell
-openas
|command (Default)OpenAs_RunDLL "%1""

Well done! Now why didn't I think of that? <headslap>

OK, but how can I remove from that list programs that are no longer on my
computer? There are 5 programs that I once had and did remove, but they
still on that list.
