Need Help With My Grandson's Computer

My grandson has an older computer (circa 1995) running Windows 95 (Ver
4.00.950).  He got the PC from someone who used it in their business, then
stripped a lot of business files from it before giving it to him.

I had sound added by CompUSA, and that seemed to be done properly.  The
computer booted up OK.   Then I added a couple of games and those games
worked OK.  However when the PC was booted the next day, it went thru all
the proper steps until it was time to bring up the Windows 95 desktop.  All
that came up was a blurred monitor screen.  The PC was unusable.

Working over the phone (from 50 miles away), I had my son-in-law start the
PC in safe mode.  The safe mode screen came up, but there was a message:
"System file error C:\Windows\System\DDEMLDLL file has been replaced with an
older version by the program you are running."

My son-in-law swears there is no dot before the dll, but I feel pretty sure
the file name is DDEML.DLL.  If I am correct, this is a DDE Management
Library file, but I don't really understand what it does or what to do to
fix the PC.  I don't know which version of the file is the right one, or
where to find such a file.  There are some on the internet, but none
specifically for Windows 95.  (We don't have the Windows 95 disk, but I
could probable borrow one from someone if needed.)  Incidentally, I examined
the floppy disks of the games I added, and none contained  the ddeml.dll
file.

Any suggestions will be appreciated.  Thanks in advance.

Follow the instructions in this article:
Err Msg: The Following System Files Have Been Replaced with...
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=kb;en-us;183479

I don't think that file is the cause of your video problem however.  One of the games you installed may have set the display to a setting that your monitor or video card can't handle.

Boot into Safe Mode, right-click the Desktop, click Properties, then click the Settings tab.
Move the sliders for Color Palette and Desktop Area to a lower setting, such as High Color or 256-Color, and 800x600, or 480x800, then click OK, and restart.
