i think win 95 should be open source since they are
discontinuing support for their product n eventually
phasing it out so old technology should be available for
everyone if theyre not planning on making any more money
on it...

I doubt that is going to happen. I think Billy and Steve like keeping their code a secret

Though, if you think about it... It would be an interesting way to counter Linux - by open-sourcing an old version of Windows. Of course, it would cannibalize Microsoft's cash cattle

Windows 95 is a marketing label.

Each version of Windows, however, consists of a very large
number of individual files.  Some of the files are common
across all versions of Windows, some are unique to a specific
version, some fall in between, and some inherited from DOS,
and some are indeed open source, from products such as FreeBSD.

Consequently, the end sum game is that Microsoft no longer
markets the specific product known as Windows 95.

However, Microsoft continues to market the Windows brand,
and most of those individual files still may have a critical role
to play in future marketing plans.

Another consideration is that Microsoft would be foolish
to hand over to a potential competitor the foundation
for a competing product.

If any company plans to market a competing desktop OS,
they will not use the Windows source code as a base
as long as Microsoft continues to keep it under wraps.

How long they can continue to do so is a matter of opinion,
as they are being pressured by foreign governments to
release the source code.  Once they do so, it is only a matter
of time before it is purloined and misappropriated.
