Okay List, here is my dilemma,
I've got an old 486 that has no math co-processor so it won't accept Win98,
The hard drive has been formatted,
I've got Win95 Upgrade Version on 3 1/2 discs but it won't install because
no previous version of Windows is on the hard drive.
I'm just trying to make that PC work for my young grandson.
Does anyone know a way I can force the Win 95 Upgrade Version I have on to
the hard drive?
Another bummer, is no CD-ROM or I could install from a CD, I got a OEM
version.

You should be able to install a CD-ROM for not much money(they're
cheap these days, and simply hook to an EIDE controller). Then you
could probably score a Win95 CD from eBay, again for not very much
money. Get a boot disk that supports a CD-ROM for free from
www.bootdisk.com, and you could be in business.

Tim,
I've taken the CD-ROM from this PC and installed it. I've got the boot disk
you spoke of, I've got Win95C on CD but the CD-ROM won't read the CD. It
will recognize it as Drive R: using the boot disk, it will open/close but
will not read any CD I put in it. I've even put in a new ribbon cable.

Why exactly won't it install? The floppy disk version of Windows 95 does
not require that there is a previous version of Windows on your hard drive
before it will install. If it's an upgrade version it may require proof that
you have a previous version of Windows, but it does not need to be
installed.

Jeff,
After Disk #2 is inserted, it says no previous version and quits.

here is something that *might* work:
on the C: drive make a windows folder
and put a dummy file in it called win.com and see if it will work

Didn't work but thanks any way. It's looking for DOS 3.31 or higher or
Windows 3.0 or higher, neither of which I have.

the very last thing i can think of...
is just to try putting a "dummy" file on a floppy
if win.com does not work
try win.cnf
or win.cn_
